WWE has an interview with NXT Season 2 Rookie Michael McGillicutty (aka Joe Hennig), as part of their weekly " The NXT Interview " where they interview a Rookie from the current season of WWE NXT. He discusses a various amount of topics including his wrestling heritage, his NXT Pro, Intercontinental Champion Kofi Kingston, and so much more. Below are some of the highlights of the interview:
On being 4-0 and why has no one been able to defeat him so far: "I think I possess skills that none of the other Rookies have. If you look, other than Kaval, all of these Rookies are either collegiate football players or basketball players. For me, this is something I was brought up in, something I was born to do. There is a lack of experience with these guys; they don’t have the background that I do."
On his relationship been with his WWE Pro, Kofi Kingston: "It’s been pretty good, we get along, and we talk about what I’m doing well, and what I need to work on. He’s been helping me come up with a new finishing move. He’s been awesome, and he seems like he actually cares and is there to help if I have questions. I watch him in the ring and the way he moves. I mean, he’s Intercontinental Champion, so he’s got to be doing something right."
On who he thinks is his biggest competition on WWE NXT: "In my eyes, ever since I started, I don’t think I really had any competition. This is my season to win. There are guys out there who are ranked ahead of me, like Kaval and Percy Watson. Kaval is ranked ahead of me because he is known worldwide; he’s been around for 10 years or whatever. Right now those are the two guys I’m worried about because they are ranked ahead of me, but this is my contest to win."
On his goal for the title he'd go after if he wins NXT: "Of course that’s the main goal. Kofi’s got the Intercontinental Championship. I don’t think many know, but if I was to become Intercontinental champion, me and my father would become the only father-son combination to ever hold the same singles title. I mean that’s something I would like to achieve, but my ultimate goal is to become Heavyweight Champion. But if it comes down to it, the Intercontinental Championship is something that means a lot to me."
On his plan to move up in the NXT poll: "It obviously has a lot to do with the WWE Universe’s and The WWE Pros’ votes. I think if I continue on with this perfect record, there is no way you can deny that. And as time goes on, the WWE Universe will find out more about who Michael McGillicutty is. As time goes on, the WWE Universe will find out that I’m going to keep on winning, and they will have to eventually turn to my side. Another thing I would like to say about the WWE Universe is that they never forget those classic matches that Shawn Michaels had, or even John Cena or Triple H or Randy Orton have. Classic matches are what people love to see. That’s why people keep coming back toWrestleMania, keep coming back to watch those guys wrestle. The WWE Universe needs to understand that starting now on WWE NXT, and when I’m done with WWE NXT, those are the kind of matches that I want to be capable of having and that’s what’s going to keep people coming back for more. That’s why I should be ranked No. 1 and win WWE NXT."
On being a third-generation competitor and constantly being compared to your father and grandfather: "I think it’s cool. I’m very proud of where I come from. I talk to my grandfather at least twice a week about this, and he gives me advice which is a little outdated, but it always helps hearing his perspective on things and what he thinks of what I’m doing, good and bad feedback."
On wanting to step out and become his own man: "Yeah exactly, I’m happy about where I’m from, but at the same time just my last name and where I come from isn’t going to get me to where I need to be, and that’s the World Heavyweight Champion – something that my grandfather and my father never accomplished. Of course, even though I’m happy about where I come from, this is the time for me to make my own name and succeed on my own."
On if he thinks his family legacy will continue on after him: "Well I do have a 3-year-old son who is a bruiser already, but my goal is to headline WrestleMania and become WWE Champion. If I could do that, that would be a great goal in itself. Then my son, Brock, lets see what he does to keep this thing going. There are a lot of kids in the Hennig family. I’m the oldest grandchild. There are about 30 on both sides, and there are people that can do it. But, it’s going to start with me, and start with me winning the WWE Championship and whatever happens after that happens."
